Lifegiver

my heart gets just as fixated as my mind these days,

each pulse feeding into some chronic compulsion

to run, to run, to run away

darkness betrays, shadows threaten to exsanguinate

(your name tastes bitter in my blood)

and I’m clinging to anything that feels like healing

to the something that trembles like a flower within me,

a sparkle that lingers while petals unfold,

this lifegiver beats vengeance and wakens the soul

Preach Peace

IMG_8859

do not open that box child,
the one marked hate,
the one that promises it’ll be ok
there is no love to be found there,
only anger and pain

we’ve gotta find another way

we need to lead with one heart,
not bitter words that incite violence,
or hostility that starts the riots

we have to do what they won’t
and preach tolerance and unity
we want love not war
so bring us healing and equality

our next chapter demands
some kind of revolution,
a day of departure
from the constant persecution

so put down the box child
and find your strength
together, we’ve got to make them believe
in peace

My Letter To You

IMG_7681

They tell you to be calm,
to be pretty,
to be strong
as if your chest can just stop pounding,
as if they don’t know that pretty hurts,
as if you can keep building yourself up
while your mind pushes you back down

They assume that your broken heart
can simply mend on its own,
that daylight can heal
your blackbird soul,
that the silent wolf
that prowls under your skin
understands what it means
to begin again

And, I can hear the fear
in your shaky voice,
the faded whispers of worry
still hanging in the air
But, love, they just don’t see –
you are already all of those things
and so much more
