sunrise.

i stood beneath a shivering sunset,
wrapped in the soft brutality of its fading light
i listened to the night life heralding the coming stars,
and i remembered all the wishes we’d made
from cold balconies on lonely evenings,
all the promises that were whispered
even though we knew they’d go unkept
we were always experts at predicting endings,
yet somehow,
we couldn’t foresee our own
i stayed there until morning,
on the balcony,
without you this time,
and i watched a peek of color
paint the cityscape in shades of day,
and it was if i were seeing dawn for the first time
i suppose i spent so many sunsets with you
that i’d never noticed how beautiful
sunrises could be

bliss.

i wake on sheets
as soft as flower petals,
tulips and tiger lilies
pressed against bare skin
the day tastes like
orange blossom and amaretto,
sunbrushed summer
exploding on my tongue
and there is no waiting for love
see,
i prayed for heaven,
and it was delivered,
all warm skin and familiar eyes
and i
am high on the type of serene
that can’t be found in a bottle,
a moonstruck mellow only found
under midnight silver skies
painted by hands that speak
the language of devotion
and together,
we dance under a rain of poetry,
the clouds spilling sonnets
of two lovers
kissed by an ethereal grace

you were never good with truth.

this distance tastes

like crimson and clover,

like whiskey on the rocks,

like m e m o r i e s

i swallow them down,

waiting

underneath the stars,

tethered to your deception,

to empty promises

and elusive dreams,

to illusions of love

that were only skin deep

i stand

beneath broken skies,

holding out for you

to say something true

but, we both know

that was never something

you knew how to do

– ashley jane

never again.

you were barrooms and bedroom eyes

filled with sweet nothing promises,

and i swallowed down your love

but couldn’t handle the burn

it left me with a black heart

and a mouth full of ashes

and now i regret the way

i let you breathe me in

because your words

left bullet wounds and bruises

all over my skin

while those whiskey lips of yours

felt just like a razor’s kiss

and i let you bleed me dry

this love is more than hallmark cards.

i don’t celebrate

v a l e n t i n e ‘ s day

it’s all overpriced roses

and cards filled with words

that should be said

every

damn

day

i don’t celebrate

commercialized love

and boxed chocolates

(i always choose the gross ones anyway)

i don’t celebrate

pretty heart shaped things

or expensive stuffed animals

(nothing can replace

the crook of your neck

or the brush of your hands)

i don’t celebrate

v a l e n t i n e ‘ s day

but, i celebrate you and me

and every single day

where i get to call you mine

Love, Lies and Lullabies by Ashley Jane

Hey guys,

You may have noticed that I’ve not posted in awhile. I’ve been super busy finalizing my first book of poetry. And now….

It’s LIVE!

Love, Lies and Lullabies now available on Amazon:

http://a.co/i2G1GYs 💜

Love, Lies, and Lullabies is a collection of poetry about relationships and the emotions that come with them. It is written for the lovers and the liars, the broken and the mended, the hardened hearts and the soft souls who lie and tell everyone that they are fine. Each chapter is filled with poems that detail the ups and downs of life and love, of pain and joy, of losing and finding yourself again.
