road trip runaways.

the sunlight burns in our rear view mirror,

a canopy of flames following close behind

we say goodbye to the bittersweet glow,

our bodies exhausted from chasing

too many unending horizons,

brutal and beautiful and beckoning

nights and days blending together,

moonrise – twilight – ethereal dawn,

each one feeding into the next

like a record on repeat

the highway bends like wisteria vines

and we just drive,

this feeling in our chest pushing us on,

demanding that we

run

explore

escape

anything to remove this ache in our veins,

anything to feed the wild in our hearts

Lifegiver

my heart gets just as fixated as my mind these days,

each pulse feeding into some chronic compulsion

to run, to run, to run away

darkness betrays, shadows threaten to exsanguinate

(your name tastes bitter in my blood)

and I’m clinging to anything that feels like healing

to the something that trembles like a flower within me,

a sparkle that lingers while petals unfold,

this lifegiver beats vengeance and wakens the soul

Wild Horses

IMG_7240

We were always
so good at running,
trading morning glories
for lavender nights,
whiskey sunsets
for a tequila sunrise
in a misguided attempt
to save others from us
We made a new home
out of back seats
and bar stools
and blue highways,
always one breath away
from being convinced
that, maybe, we could stay

But, we were never meant
for one place,
our hearts too much
like wild horses,
and running
was in our veins
